Reflections on your fellowship: I could not have asked for better mentors, colleagues and friends. This was the most rewarding and motivating year of my training, and I feel incredibly fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with all of my mentors. From the unparalleled clinical experience to the recreational opportunities outside of work, it was the perfect balance. I look forward to a long career from which I am sure to draw from what I learned during this year of training every day.

Reflections on your Fellowship: My fellowship training year in Seattle was fantastic and will forever be grateful for the opportunity to spend a year learning shoulder and elbow surgery at UW.  I was exposed to all aspects of open, arthroscopic and revision shoulder and elbow surgery.  This provided a tremendous foundation for starting a shoulder and elbow practice immediately out of fellowship.  More importantly, beyond the surgical experience itself, the faculty and the fellowship experience as a whole shaped the way I thought and approached shoulder and elbow pathology in my daily practice.  My shoulder practice is what it is today because of the invaluable experience I had in Seattle
Favorite Recreations: Spending time with my wife and kids, anything outdoor, hiking, golf, working out

Reflections on your fellowship: Just an amazing year. I had spent 5 years as an ortho resident at the UW so I knew the people and the system, but the fellowship year stands out above and beyond everything else. When I completed the shoulder rotation as a 3rd-year resident at the UW, I was 100% sure that is what I wanted to do with my life. Fortunately, I was taken on as a fellow and it shaped the rest of my career and life. I learned more than a ton from Rick and Kevin. Techniques, methods, terms, and sayings I use every day. Beyond the nuts and bolts of the shoulder exam and surgical techniques, I by chance was introduced to in-office shoulder ultrasound at the beginning of my fellowship. That in itself has taken my career to places I never thought possible.
Favorite Recreations: I like to work out still. I can't do some of the high-impact things I used to do because of some ankle arthritis, but have adapted a bit. I have 3 teenage boys who play a lot of basketball so that currently occupies a lot of my time.

What total elbow arthroplasty system did you use during UW fellowship?: I think it was Biomet...cant remember!

Memorable or meaningful quote or paraphrase from you UW fellowship mentors?: "You're a good guy with a bad shoulder.......and I can't help you" Kevin Smith
"You can be part of the problem or part of the solution" Rick Matsen
"Terrific!" Rick Matsen
What is your greatest accomplishment that is directly related to your UW fellowship?: Tough to put into words but I would say 2 things. First, it gave me the training and confidence to come to a competitive environment in 2004 in San Diego and present myself as a highly trained shoulder arthroplasty specialist who wanted to do only shoulder surgery. Believe it or not, no one could say that in San Diego in 2004. It worked brilliantly!
Secondly, my fortunate introduction to shoulder ultrasound at the beginning of my fellowship put me in the right place at the right time to help spearhead the in-office MSK ultrasound revolution. I founded my MSK ultrasound course in 2008 with Don Buford (orthosono.com) and have taught over  3000 healthcare providers how to use ultrasound for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes including diagnosing cuff tears and ultrasound-guided injections including orthobiologics. Thank you Rick and Kevin!

Other Fellowships: Texas Orthopaedic Hospital (Gary Gartsman), 2000; Also have PhD in Biomedical Engineering Vandy
Fellowship Mentors: Matsen; Smith; Harryman; Simonian; Sidles; Jackins
Reflections on your Fellowship: Terrific big-picture mentoring; Great Wednesday research days from 4:30am onwards; Loved the autonomy of the ACE clinics (couldn't wrap my head around the fact that I was seeing midlevel Microsoft directors in "my clinic"); two super-impactful research projects... and under Sidles direction our exhaustive research into the biologic arthroplasties of the early 1900s helped lay the foundation for the ream and run (who knew?!). Favorite saying: Kevin Smith telling former Harryman patients (who often hailed from between Yakima and Spokane): " I can't look you in the eye and tell you that I have an operation or a treatment that will help you".
Favorite Recreations: Skiing with the Matsens at Steven's; Skiing in shorts at Crystal; roaming around the Pacific NW with friends; biking to West Seattle; eating at Ivars; soaking in the rooftop (communal) hot tub overlooking Elliott Bay.

Reflections on your fellowship: Dr. Matsen and Anne were extremely generous with their time and spirit and teaching. Dr. Matsen was an unbelievable surgeon, truly intelligent, and knew how to treat others.  Incredible work ethic.  He truly inspired me to be a better physician and person and husband. But very humbling to be around him and see how great his interpersonal skills are.

Dr. Harryman was unfortunately very ill, but still unbelievably hard working.  So kind, so passionate. Truly wanted to teach me as much as he could with the time that he had left, and for that I am grateful as he could have been doing other more personal activities.

Dr. Smith was the young attending a few years out of practice, and was incredibly kind and fun.  Was great to work with.  He was an unbelievable relatable bridge to access Drs. Matsen and Harryman who although are approachable were leaps above a fellow with experience and wisdom.
Favorite Recreations: running, working out
