The visiting student scholarship program is a funded opportunity created to reduce financial barriers for medical students who may not otherwise have access to visiting sub-internship opportunities. The program is intended to support students from all backgrounds, particularly those who have demonstrated resilience in overcoming significant challenges on their path to medicine. In doing so, the program seeks to create more access to clinical training and professional development in orthopaedic surgery.
Scholarship recipients will complete a four-week rotation at one of our affiliated clinical sites, including UW Medical Center, UW Medical Center Northwest Hospital, Seattle Children's Hospital, Seattle VA Medical Center, and Harborview Medical Center. During this time, students will function at the level of an intern, participating fully in patient care across a range of cases. Students are expected to attend all scheduled faculty teaching sessions/conferences and take trauma call at our Level I Orthopaedic Trauma service at Harborview Medical Center.
Eligibility
The scholarship program welcomes applicants who demonstrate academic commitment and resilience. Scholarship applicants should have a strong interest in pursuing a career in orthopaedic surgery and must be currently enrolled in a U.S. medical school. Scholarships will be awarded to applicants who have been (or will be) offered a rotation via AAMC's Visiting Student Learning Opportunities (VSLO).

Additional Information
Scholarship eligibility requires applicants to apply for a clerkship via VSLO and receive an official offer.
To accommodate the full visiting student season (June 29 – November 13, 2026), applications will be reviewed in four distinct cycles. If you applied in a previous cycle but have not yet received a VSLO offer, please update or resubmit your application to remain under consideration for subsequent cycles.
