Drs. Hagen and Fitz Explain Common Causes of Hip Pain and How to Treat It

Dr. Mia Hagen and Dr. David Fitz were recently interviewed for UW Medicine's digital publication Right as Rain and provided insight on why hip pain is so common and how to treat it.

Although commonly thought of as affecting mostly older people, Drs. Hagen and Fitz explain that hip pain can occur due to a variety of reasons at any age.

In the article, Why Hip Pain Is so Common - and How to Treat It, Drs. Hagen and Fitz identify four common causes of hip pain and provide treatment options for each.

  • Hip Impingement
  • Hip Bursitis
  • Hip Dysplasia
  • Hip Arthritis

Each patient's situation is different but most treatment regimens for hip pain start with strenthening exercises. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or cortisone injections may also be recommended.

Dr. Hagen advises, "For hip pain in general, surgery should be the last option." If hip pain persists once nonsurgical treatment options have been exhausted, surgery may be an effective treatment option to alleviate hip pain.
