Kyle Chun, MD, '13

Welcome to the Resident Spotlight!

Every month, we will try to highlight one of our very own Orthopaedic Surgery residents and get to know them a little better.

This Month, we would like to introduce:

Kyle Chun, MD '13

Full name:
Kyle Chun

Nicknames:
Pretty much Chun or Chunner up here in Seattle.  At home, just Kyle.

Where are you from and where did you attend medical school? What was your favorite non-orthopaedic rotation?
Born and raised in Wahiawa, Hawaii.  Medical school at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.  Probably psych ‘cause none of them work in Hawaii – I showed up at 9am and left by 1030 for seven weeks straight.  Fishing by lunch.

When did you decide to pursue Orthopaedic Surgery?
All the ortho guys back home were super cruise and laid back.  Looked like they had fun.

What attracted you to the University of Washington?
Dr. Hanel was the only straight-shooting PD that I interviewed with – no nonsense, no pretense, no blowing of smoke.  Plus, the HMC sub-I was awesome.

If you had a month off to do whatever you wanted to relax, what would that be?
Either take my wife and kids camping or hunt for four weeks straight.

What 3 things would you bring with you if you got stranded on a island for 1 month?
A fishing pole, knife, and my .45

What is the best excuse for being late to something or the best excuse that you have heard?
I don’t need an excuse, I’m from Hawaii.

What is your favorite meal?
Pulehu’ ribs or fried ‘opelu on hot rice

Who is your favorite music artist?
Depends – Katchafire, kalapana, the green, ac/dc, hillsong united, kapena…depends.

Best color scrubs you have ever worn?
What? Really?

What is the best advice you have received or could give to medical students pursuing Orthopaedic Surgery/Sports Medicine?
Stay balanced, have fun.  Remember where you came from.
