WWAMI Clerkships

The goal of the WWAMI program is to make public medical education accessible to residents throughout Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho. To advance excellence in medical education, the UW School of Medicine partners not only with the five WWAMI states, but also with faculty, physicians, universities, hospitals, and clinics within these states to help meet physician workforce in the region. The following clerkships are spread throughout the WWAMI region.

  • General Orthopaedic Clerkship – Jackson, WY (ORTHP 644)

    • Develop a thorough orthopaedic examination.
    • Develop a better understanding of basic orthopaedic disorders.
    • Develop skills to place injections in the orthopaedic office setting.
    • Learn to scrub in and assist with orthopaedic procedures to include wound closure skills.
    • Learn orthopedic trauma management to include reduction of joints and fractures with splint placement.
    • Develop ability to review orthopedic imaging to include x-rays, CTs, and MRIs.

    • Identify and describe normal musculoskeletal variations of childhood

    • Identify and describe the general musculoskeletal diseases of childhood:
      • Bone and joint infections
      • Hip diseases
      • Spine deformity
      • Foot deformity
      • Limb deficiency and limb length inequality
      • Sports injury in the immature athlete
      • Musculoskeletal trauma
      • Casting and splinting
    • Make a reasonable and appropriate differential diagnosis.
    • Know the pertinent diagnostic categories and the likelihood of each.
    • Demonstrate the ability to perform a focused history and physical examination emphasizing evaluation of the spine and extremities in the pediatric and adolescent patient.
    • Choose the appropriate imaging studies of different conditions
    • Provide the standard of care in the community.
    • Know what can be treated and what should be referred.
    • Identify conditions that warrant referral to the relevant specialty.
    • Ask for assistance when necessary and warranted.
