A brief note from our chair, Howard A. Chansky, MD.

Letter from the Chair

2020 brings an exciting opportunity for further expansion of our clinical programs. With the official merger of Northwest Hospital and the University of Washington Medical Center, we are now one integrated hospital on two campuses. This will permit further growth of our orthopaedic practice while providing enhanced exposure of our residents and fellows to a highly efficient community hospital.

In September of 2019 our department hosted an Nth Dimensions bio-skills laboratory for about 100, high school and college aged students. Many of our surgeons and staff volunteered their time at this Friday evening event. We had multiple stations set up with surgical demonstrations so that the students could get a hands-on experience led by renowned University of Washington orthopaedic faculty. The students clearly enjoyed this evening as reflected by the question and answer session that ran until the late late evening.

Our partners at Seattle Children’s Hospital continue to advance orthopaedic care to children in our region. Under the section leadership of Dr. Jennifer Bauer, she and Dr. Klane White are continuing to provide world class care for children with spinal deformity. Dr. Todd Blumberg will return to full time practice in March to provide state of the art care in pediatric hip surgery.

We welcomed Drs. David Fitz and Kenneth Chin to our department in 2019 along with Dr. Tony Kim, a podiatrist. Dr. Fitz, a total joints specialist, joined us after completing his total joints fellowship at Massachusetts General hospital and Dr. Chin, a foot & ankle specialist with a particular interest in sports injuries, joined us after fellowship training at the University of Maryland. Tony Kim joins us from his private practice in Yakima, WA. Drs. Florence Unno and Will Lack are pairing to form the core of our facture care at Northwest Hospital.  The growth of our department at the Northwest campus will be a critical component of our continued success..

Our faculty and researchers continue to expand the breath and knowledge of orthopaedic surgery, click here to see our most recent publications and AAOS contributions.
