Fractures to the pelvic ring can be devastating injuries. Patients with these injuries used to be doomed for a lifetime of pain and disability -- if they survived. The Orthopaedic Fracture and Trauma surgeons at Harborview Medical Center have been at the forefront of advancing care of these injuries with minimally invasive fixation techniques and application of logical treatment algorithms. Dr. M.L."Chip" Routt, Professor and Chief of the Pelvic and Acetabular Fracture service at HMC presents the experiences of his service in percutaneous care of these injuries. He is followed by Prof. Dr. Thomas Schildhauer, Chairman of the Department of Surgery in the prestigious Ruhr Universitaet Bochum, Germany who reports on his experiences with stabilization of injuries at the junction of spine and pelvic ring. He is followed by Dr. Roland Kent, Clinical Instructor, University of Washington, who has presents his research on new stabilization techniques and their impact on patient outcomes for patients with these types of serious injuries.
