Osteoporotic Fractures
Dr. David C. Ring, Massachusetts General Hospital
Dr. Pietro Regazzoni, Universitätsspital Basel
Loss of bone quality is an increasingly common problem for our increasingly aging population and many medical conditions, which can adversely affect bone health. Poor bone quality in elderly or sick patients increases the risk of fractures and challenges care providers in terms of 'how to treat' these injuries as well as how to measure outcomes of treatment. Professor Regazzoni of Switzerland is considered one of the major pioneers of internal fracture fixation from the 1970's. In his lecture he makes a case for individualized patient centric care approaches rather than taking a regimented 'one size fits all' approach towards fracture care. Dr. Ring from the Harvard School of Medicine presents epidemiologic and outcomes based data on the challenges of treating patients with impaired bone quality.
