Muscle Injuries Around the Hip
Historically, muscle and tendon injuries around the hip and pelvic areas have been the source of a great frustration. These injuries can create both a great deal of pain and dysfunction on the part of patients and a good deal of diagnostic and therapeutic uncertainty for physicians. Two injuries specifically -- hamstring tendon tears and gluteus medius injuries are quite common but as such particularly poorly understood. Dr. Bruce Twaddle, Professor of Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine, discusses hamstring injuries and introduces newer surgical treatments for these often very disabling conditions, while also discussing the role and expectations of nonoperative care. Dr. Justin Klimish, a Clinical Assistant Professor in UW Orthopaedics provides further insights into gluteus medius injuries. This injury presents with buttock pain and hip abduction weakness and is frequently misunderstood. Dr. Klimish offers some more recent insights in how to diagnose and how to manage these injuries.
