Dr. Nicholas Hernandez and Dr. Freddy Yang (R3) have found that survivorship for patients how have had TKA revisions not caused by infection was higher for patients aged 65 years and older.
Dr. Yang and colleagues reviewed aseptic revision TKAs performed between 2012 and 2020 and identified patients who had a subsequent re-revision and found that patients 65 and older were less likely to need re-revisions. Of the patients identified as having subsequent re-revisions 94.4% of the patients of the patients 65 and older were revision free 10 years following re-revision surgery vs. 89.9% for patients under 65.
Clinical implications may include counselling patients younger than 65 that results of re-revision TKA may not be as good as for older patients and ensuring a solid diagnosis for younger patients as survivorship may not be quite as high.
Dr. Yang recently reported results of this study at the AAOS 2024 Annual Meeting. Dr. Hernandez and Dr. Yang also shared the findings with healio.com.
