Ted Gross, PhD, recently spoke to NY Magazine to discuss a health trend popular on social media.

Vibration plates are one of the more recent health trends to gain attention on social media.  Users claim several health benefits provided by standing on vibration plates including muscle building and toning, increased bone density, cellulite reduction, improved lymphatic drainage, and improved workout recovery.

Dr. Gross addressed some claims that the vibrating plates increase bone density, and it turns out this claim has some merit but with a major caveat. Dr. Gross says there is some research that shows low-intensity vibration plates can help stimulate bone formation and reduce bone-density loss, but vibration plates are not as effective as resistance training and that high-intensity vibration plates may not be safe for people who are not stable on their feet or those who have vascular or metabolic conditions.
