Harborview Medical Center: Pioneer and Leader in Trauma Care

Dr. Michael Copass (Harborview Medical Center)
Mr. Richard "Dick" Foley (TV Host and Seattle storyteller)
Dr. Robert Clawson (Northwest Orthopaedic Center)

Through an amazing constellation of circumstances, this former King County Hospital has blossomed from the only Level I Regional trauma center to one of the very top Trauma Centers in the world. Moderated by Dr. Bruce J. Sangeorzan, Dr, Mike Copass reflects on the beginnings of Harborview as a trauma center in the late nineteen-sixtees. Based upon advances in the development of portable electrocardiography recording devices, Seattle developed one of the very first integrated emergency retrieval systems in North America in conjunction with the Seattle Fire Department and specially trained firefighters. Through the years Harborview then set the standards in the retrieval of acutely injured patients and repair of broken bones. This unique contribution to fracture and trauma care is presented by Mr. Dick Foley, TV personality, in form of a video titled the 'Harborview Trauma Story'. This video was created by Dr. Robert Clawson, Clinical Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Washington.
